Birmingham City are considering a surprise move to bring striker James Vaughan back to the club from Bury, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Vaughan started the season at Birmingham after his loan deal from Huddersfield became permanent, but he moved to Bury at the end of August on a free transfer after leaving St Andrew’s by mutual consent.

Birmingham-born Vaughan was in red-hot form for Bury with a stunning four-goal salvo in just 20 minutes to inspire his side to a 5-1 win over play-off chasing Peterborough United at Gigg Lane.

The 28-year-old has netted 14 goals in 23 appearances for League One strugglers Bury with the win over Peterborough their first since September to lift them out of the relegation zone.

Birmingham boss Gianfranco Zola is in the market for a new striker during this month’s transfer window and has been alerted to Vaughan.

Birmingham are one of the lowest scorers in the Championship with just 30 goals and Zola knows they need to bolster their attacking options if they are to move up the table.

Bury will be reluctant to lose their top scorer as they battle to avoid relegation from League One, but they would find it hard to resist a sizeable offer for the player before the transfer window closes.
