Birmingham City are hopeful of signing Chelsea midfielder Kasey Palmer on loan, HITC Sport understands.

Palmer is currently back at Chelsea after his season-long loan spell at Huddersfield Town was cut short.

The 21-year-old struggled to hold down a regular place in the Huddersfield side this season, after helping them win promotion to the Premier League last time round.

Chelsea are happy to loan out Palmer again before the close of the transfer window as he is well down the pecking order in Antonio Conte’s first-team plans at Stamford Bridge.

A number of Championship clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Norwich City have expressed an interest in taking Palmer on loan, but Birmingham are leading the race for the attacker’s signature.

Birmingham boss Steve Cotterill is desperate to strengthen his squad before Wednesday’s transfer deadline and sees Palmer as someone who can add goals and creativity to his side.

Birmingham are second from bottom of the Championship and Cotterill knows they need reinforcements if they are to avoid relegation this season.
