HITC Sport understands Southampton are closing in on the Basel star as Elyounoussi undergoes a medical.

Southampton are poised to sign FC Basel winger Mohamed Elyounoussi with the Norwegian international undergoing a medical at St Mary’s, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Southampton and Wolfsburg both agreed fees in the region of £17million with Basel for Elyounoussi earlier this week, but the player has opted to move to the Premier League and join Southampton.

The 23-year-old has earned himself a reputation as one of the best young attacking players in Europe after impressing for club and country during the last 12 months.
Elyounoussi scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in 44 appearances for Basel last season, including a goal and a man-of-the match performance during Basel’s shock 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League in March.

Southampton have been looking to bolster their attacking options and Elyounoussi will help fill the void left by Dusan Tadic’s departure to Ajax this week.
Southampton have already signed Stuart Armstrong from Celtic this summer and Elyounoussi is on the verge of becoming Mark Hughes’ second new signing at St Mary’s.
