Barnsley have signed Middlesbrough defender Adam Jackson for an undisclosed fee, the club confirmed via their official website.

Jackson has penned a three-year deal with the Championship high-flyers after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical at Oakwell.

The 22-year-old will help fill the void by Alfie Mawson’s expected departure to Swansea City.

Jackson came through the youth system at Middlesbrough, but failed to make a senior appearance for the club.

The former England Under-19 international enjoyed a successful spell out on loan at Hartlepool last season, winning the club’s Young Player of the Year after impressing in his 37 appearances for the club.

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom told the club’s official website he was impressed by Jackson during his loan spell at Hartlepool and believes he will prove a valuable addition to his plans at Oakwell.

“He stood out and excelled in League Two with Hartlepool, and having watched him for a long period of time we know exactly what he is capable of.

“He is ready for the challenge of the Championship. He’s a player with great strength and will provide us with a big physical presence at the back.

“His ball distribution, speed, and ability to bring the ball out from the back fits perfectly into our playing style and I’m really looking forward to working with him as we look to continue what has been a superb start to the season.”
