Bernd Leno had a bit of a stinker for Arsenal against Everton on Friday night and Ian Wright has described the goalkeeper’s error as ‘amateurish’.
Richarlison delivered a low cross into Arsenal’s box on 76 minutes and the Germany international, with his legs too far apart, wound up somehow nutmegging himself and diverting the ball into his own net.
It was the latest in a series of costly mistakes that Leno has made for the Gunners this season.
And Wright, speaking to Optus Sport, has described the gaffe as ‘poor, poor, poor goalkeeping’.
He said: “You look at that and it does seem very amateruish and I think that comes down to concentration. He does have spells where he’s very, very good. But I’ve seen him rush out, get sent off, give away penalties. He has these moments and that for me is a real moment there. It’s poor, poor, poor goalkeeping.”
Leno set Arsenal back some £22 million almost three years ago and although he does have some cracking games every now and again, he’s a difficult goalkeeper to trust.
Mikel Arteta’s back four are already quite shaky at the best of times and it’ll do nothing for their collective confidence in defence if they don’t have complete and utter trust in the man behind them.
That being said, every goalkeeper goes through a sticky patch, irrespective of how highly rated they are, and Arteta will be hoping to see Leno bounce back on Thursday for a huge Europa League semi-final with Villarreal.
