Ian Wright has told Premier League Matchday Extra that Tottenham star Emerson Royal’s crossing is “poor”. The Arsenal legend feels that if Spurs are to progress, then they must sort out their right flank soon.

Emerson, 22, joined Spurs from Barcelona in the summer. His form, to be fair to the Brazilian, has been up and down. Indeed, his debut came in the form of a 3-0 humiliation against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The defender has remained first choice on the right flank under Antonio Conte. But that might be more down to the competition below him – in the form of Matt Doherty and Japhet Tanganga.

The Evening Standard reported over the weekend that Antonio Conte was so dismayed by Emerson’s performance against Watford, he wants a replacement. Now, Wright has also criticised the ex-Barcelona man.

“Conte has got them really well organised, the front three are firing now. Emerson Royal’s delivery has been poor, if they can get that right side sorted out, Tottenham are going to be a problem,” Wright said.

Wright on Emerson: Harsh on Tottenham man, or better needed?

Emerson has not proven his £25million (BBC) since joining Tottenham. But still only 22, Emerson has surely got to be given the time to improve and adapt. At a young age, he is learning in a brand new country.

At least, he should be handed the first season at Spurs to improve. A year of building his form first. If nothing has improved over the next six months, then Tottenham should consider a change of personnel.

There have been some brilliant performances from Emerson, too. Some glimpses that he can contribute – but that needs to become more consistent. He has the best manager in place, if he is to do so.
