Glenn Hoddle has criticised Joe Rodon for giving the ball away at the very first opportunity for Tottenham Hotspur last night on BT Sport.
Starting poorly
Rodon was handed a rare start for Spurs in their 1-0 defeat to Vitesse, but the central defender didn’t make the most auspicious of openings.
The Welshman was guilty of giving away possession almost immediately, as he sent a wayward pass into midfield.
Tottenham then ceded possession, which was the story of the match – as they failed to ever really get going.
And Hoddle felt that Rodon’s first pass really set the tone for the rest of the evening.
“Before the game we were saying there’s opportunities to show the manager what they can do, but the start of the game was poor,” he said.
“Rodon here, it’s a straight ball, and he gives it away. That’s in the first minute! That set the tone for Tottenham.
“Quite frankly they haven’t got any better. They are trying to build from the back, but you have to have players that are comfortable to do that.”
One of the stronger performers?
Rodon actually was one of the better performers for Tottenham last night.
While Spurs never really got going, the central defender could hardly be blamed for the defeat.
Rodon was generally reliable defensively when called upon, although his distribution could have been improved.
The Jose Mourinho signing does face a tough task to break into Tottenham’s team, though.
Nuno seems to have settled upon Eric Dier and Cristian Romero being his first choice pairing, and unless injury strikes, Rodon may have to make do with Conference League and cup football for now.
