Pontus Jansson has been linked with Southampton, with Fotbollskanalen claiming that the Premier League club want the Leeds United defender as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk, who has left for Liverpool for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £75 million.

The Sweden international, though, should not even think of leaving Leeds for Southampton this month.

True, the Saints are in the Premier League, but Southampton have stagnated and are involved in a relegation dogfight.

At Southampton, Jansson would be fighting for survival and always looking over his shoulder, whereas at Leeds, the only way to go is up and there is a sense that the club are looking forward.

The Whites are challenging for a place in the playoffs, and there is a sense of optimism at Elland Road this season.

There is every possibility that at the end of the season Leeds could get promoted to the Premier League and Southampton could get relegated to the Championship.
