Pontus Jansson has admitted that he no longer views himself as one of the main men at Leeds, but insisted that the entire squad could secure legendary status by taking the Whites to the Premier League, in comments reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
Leeds go into this weekend’s play-off semi-final first-leg with Derby County looking to shake off the poor form that saw their automatic-promotion hopes disappear in the final weeks of the season.
Despite finishing third, Marcelo Bielsa’s side may actually be the biggest underdogs of the four in many fans’ eyes. But that is what could make their achievement all the more incredible if Leeds manage to end their 15-year wait to get back into the top flight.
And as he responded to being asked whether helping guide Leeds to promotion would turn him into a legend at Elland Road, Jansson explained how his perception of his own importance to the club has changed during his time in Yorkshire.
“I think everybody would be legends, especially Marcelo, he is like a God here,” he said, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“When I came I saw myself as one of the main men but not any more, I am just so happy to be here and if the fans like me then great.”
Like Pablo Hernandez and Kalvin Phillips, Jansson arguably has an ability to inspire those around him. When he is playing at his peak, he can often help drag Leeds towards a positive result.
He is certainly one of the most popular members of the squad amongst the Leeds fans, and he will probably be one of the players that the supporters want a stature of outside the ground should they go on and knock Derby out before triumphing at Wembley.
