Leeds United recently secured the eye-catching signing of Torino defender Pontus Jansson on loan. The Swedish international’s switch from Serie A was certainly a shrewd piece of business from the club – with Jansson set to strengthen the club’s defensive positions.

The move would be seen by many however to be a step down. The player has switched the top-flight of Italian football for England’s second-tier.

However, the player himself is not in agreement.

Speaking to Sydsvenskan the central defender made his opinion clear, insisting the stature of Leeds as a club made this no step back in his career:

“It is a good step in the development of my career.

“I needed to play and wanted to get everything finished quickly.

“And I’m pleasantly surprised. This is significantly better than expected.”

Jansson certainly has pedigree, with plenty of Sweden international caps and appearances in the top-flight of Italian football.

The Swedish centre-back will now be asked to add some steel and class to the Leeds back-line – which has looked ropey throughout the start of the season.

It is also clear that the move to Leeds will not impact his international chances. He is in the Sweden team to face the Netherlands next month. He told Sydsvenskan of his call-up:

“It will be a blast. It feels good to be involved from the beginning and all the way.”

Hopefully his form for Leeds will go on to warrant his place in the international set-up.
