Pontus Jansson has told the Daily Express that he hopes that Massimo Cellino gives Garry Monk time to turn things around at Leeds United despite the side’s disappointing start to the new season.

Following the 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town on Saturday, the Whites have fallen into the relegation zone in the Championship, having collected just four points from their opening six league games.

And while a manager with Monk’s Premier League experience would normally be given much more time before he was deemed to be under pressure, the fact that Cellino has parted company with several head coaches already during his brief time at Elland Road means that some would be forgiven for fearing for Monk’s future.

But Jansson has suggested that the former Swansea boss deserves more time, and suggested that his teammates need to win their upcoming game with Blackburn for him.

“We know the recent history here with managers and I hope the boss will be given time to implement his plans,” he told the Express.

“It’s not just about the coach, it’s about the players. We have to take responsibility and do the job out on the pitch, so on Tuesday we’ll go out to do it for him.”

Letting Monk go would arguably be a big gamble. Not only does he boast top flight experience, but a new man would still have to work with his squad until January and would not be able to make any changes following the decision to scrap the loan window.

But if results continue to disappoint, then it may become a gamble that Cellino is more than willing to take in an attempt to change the club’s fortunes.
