Leeds United beat Brentford 1-0 at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.
Leeds United continued their push for a Championship play-off place as they beat Brentford 1-0 at Elland Road on Saturday evening.
The Whites went into the game having won six of their previous eight Championship games, and having beaten Reading 2-0 in midweek, Garry Monk’s side were in high spirits as they took on Brentford.
Kyle Bartley of Leeds United scores against Brentford
Without key striker Chris Wood though, Leeds struggled to break down Brentford, and after Luke Ayling and Souleymane Doukara had missed good chances to score, it looked like Leeds would have to settle for a point.
However, Leeds did conjure up a winner, as Kyle Bartley beat Brentford goalkeeper Daniel Bentley to Stuart Dallas’ cross, heading into the net to give Leeds all three points.
Pontus Jansson of Leeds United celebrates
Leeds managed to see out the final stages of the game to clinch the win, and sit fifth in the Championship table, ten points off an automatic promotion spot.
Monk’s men are impressing this season but face a tricky trip to Preston on Boxing Day, and for now, the Leeds players have been celebrating Saturday’s win.
Defender Pontus Jansson commented on the team’s fighting spirit to claim a late winner, whilst Luke Ayling showed his relief at Leeds winning despite him missing his big chance, and Hadi Sacko thanked for the fans for a terrific atmosphere.
Marcus Antonsson and Liam Cooper were both named as substitutes against Brentford but celebrated the three points, and midfielder Eunan O’Kane – ruled out through injury – was happy with the win even though it came late in the day, and wished fans a great Christmas.
