Liverpool were knocked out of the EFL Cup after losing 2-0 on aggregate.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool missed out on a chance to reach the EFL Cup final as they were beaten 1-0 on the night and 2-0 on aggregate in their semi-final against Southampton. But who do Reds fans hold most responsible for their defeat? Before you get the chance to vote, here is a look at an incredibly frustrating night for the Merseyside outfit…
Liverpool went into the second-leg off the back of one of the worst runs of form they have endured since Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield.
Their narrow FA Cup third round replay victory over Plymouth was their only win in their previous six games in all competitions, and that run had included a narrow loss to the Saints in the first-leg, as well as a surprise defeat to Premier League strugglers Swansea City in their most recent outing.
Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge shoots over
The Reds dominated possession against Claude Puel’s side and had several good chances to break the deadlock and level the tie overall. However, they squandered those opportunities and Southampton put the contest beyond doubt in stoppage-time when Shane Long smashed the winning goal past Loris Karius.
But who is to blame for the defeat? Klopp has attracted some criticism amongst Reds fans, while Daniel Sturridge missed several great chances to find the back of the net.
Though replays suggested that referee Martin Atkinson got the decision right not to award Liverpool a late penalty when Divock Origi went down, he did appear to miss a handball in the Southampton box earlier in the contest so may not be too popular.
Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson and Emre Can were arguably disappointing in the middle of the park so may perhaps be deemed by some to be at fault for the loss. But who gets your vote?
