Sunderland appear to be in serious danger of going down, so could a change of manager appease disgruntled supporters?
With 13 games to go in the Premier League this season, Sunderland appear to be in serious danger of being relegated to the Championship. While that is a sentence that seems to be stated every season over the past few years, Black Cats supporters would be forgiven for fearing that their luck may be about to run out at some stage and the team will fall just short of another great escape.
Jamie Redknapp worried for Swansea, Sunderland and Hull City’s chances of survival
Should that happen, would Sunderland fans really want David Moyes to stay on as manager? For that matter, even if they stay up, are supporters convinced that he is the right man to lead them?
Well, before you get your chance to vote for who you want to be the club’s manager next season, here is a look at some of the contenders that would perhaps be in the running if a vacancy came up…
Sunderland manager David Moyes
For starters, of course, there is no reason to suggest that David Moyes will not be at Stadium of Light next term. The Scotsman signed a four-year deal when he arrived in the summer (via BBC Sport), so long-term stability appears to be a priority for the club.
Sam Allardyce was the man Moyes replaced after he sensationally guided them to survival last season. He has unfinished business with Sunderland having left for the England job, and life at Crystal Palace has not gone well so far, so maybe he would be tempted if the Black Cats came calling.
Gary Rowett
In terms of out of work managers the club could pursue, the likes of Mark Warburton and Gary Rowett would surely be popular names to target. Warburton enjoyed a mixed spell at Rangers while Rowett’s stock was only rising before he was surprisingly dismissed by Birmingham earlier this season.
Lamine Kone posts message on Twitter; angry Sunderland fans respond
The controversial option would be someone like Alan Pardew. Like Allardyce, he has previously managed at Newcastle so he would have a mountain to climb if he hoped to win supporters over. However, he knows both of the top two divisions very well, and has briefly threatened to take some unfancied sides right up the table.
But do any of those names appeal to Sunderland fans?
