After some shock results in the Championship, which team pulled off the most stand-out performance?
Barnsley’s Adam Davies celebrates
After another few days of shocks and surprises in the Championship, the race for both promotion, and escape from relegation, is seriously hotting up. But which team has emerged from this weekend as the stand-out performer? Before we give you the chance to vote, here’s a look at the contenders…
Preston North End
Preston North End’s Jordan Hugill celebrates
A brace from Jordan Hugill helped Preston complete a second half fightback against Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa. The hosts were in control at half-time after Albert Adomah scored two early goals, the second from the penalty spot. But Hugill found the top corner after a fantastic run, and then followed that up with a headed goal from close range after an Aiden McGeady cross. The result keeps Preston in 11th.
Brighton and Hove Albion
Anthony Knockaert scored twice to secure yet another win for Brighton at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night. Knockaert’s opener was cancelled out by Lewis Dunk’s own goal before half-time, but the key moment came at 1-1, when the Seagulls had Glenn Murray sent off for handling Glenn Loovens’ shot at goal. After Forestieri’s penalty was saved, Knockaert pocked home the winner for Brighton in the 85th minute.
Derby County
Derby County’s Will Hughes scores their third goal
Despite falling behind, Derby County turned their game against Reading around this weekend, scoring 3 goals to close the gap on a play-off place. Despite Swift’s opener, goals from Darren Bent, Tom Ince and Will Hughes secured an excellent Rams comeback.
Newcastle United
Newcastle went back to the top of the Championship with a 4-0 win against bottom side Rotherham United. Daryl Murphy struck in first-half stoppage time, and Matt Ritchie made the game safe soon after the restart as he slotted home a second. Ayoze Perez scored the third before Ritchie got his second with a smart finish.
Barnsley
Conor Hourihane (C) celebrates
Barnsley scored three goals in nine minutes to come from behind and beat Leeds United in a breathtaking Championship derby at Oakwell. Chris Wood scored his 18th goal of the season to put Leeds ahead, before Tom Bradshaw’s header on the stroke of half-time began the turnaround. On-loan winger Ryan Kent then fired the Tykes in front, and captain Conor Hourihane’s free-kick made it 3-1. Wood again scored from the penalty spot for a tense finish, but Barnsley ended the victors in an enthralling 3-2 win.
