Poll result: The central midfielder fans voted the best in the Championship

Fans have been voting for the best central midfielder in the Championship, including players from Newcastle United, Derby County, and Aston Villa.

Over the last couple of days, Championship supporters have been voting away as part of a HITC Sport poll, after being asked to choose the central midfielder they believe is the number one in the Sky Bet Championship. Midfield maestros from clubs such as Newcastle United, Fulham, Derby County, Aston Villa and Huddersfield Town were all selected.

But which midfielder took the top spot? Let’s take a look at how the votes panned out, and who came away as the fan-voted best centre-midfielder in the Championship…

3. Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa) – 13%

After some outstanding performances in a Barnsley shirt, over the course of last season and this season, Republic of Ireland midfielder Conor Hourihane earned himself a move to Aston Villa in January. With a big task on his hands to help turn this suffering giant around, the midfielder has proved just how class he is by playing a major part in the Villans recent turn around. Able to score goals from anywhere, and provide assists in the most difficult situations, Conor Hourihane has deservedly made it into the top three.

2. Will Hughes (Derby County) – 24%

The England U21 international has been a consistent star in an otherwise inconsistent Derby County side over the last few years, and has racked up over 160 appearances for his hometown club…all by the age of 21! With the appointment of Gary Rowett, Will Hughes’ future at Pride Park is uncertain. However, there’s no doubting that the youngster would love to reach the Premier League with the club he’s always supported, and if Rowett can get the Rams heading in this direction, they might just be able to keep hold of him.

1. Jonjo Shelvey (Newcastle United) – 41%

Running away with the result after picking up a massive 41%, Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is the top pick amongst those who took part in our HITC Sport poll. Dictating play, providing assists from all over the shop and generally running the show from the heart of the Magpies midfield, Jonjo Shelvey has been one of the best players in the division this season, let alone the best central midfielder.
