Stunners by Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, Liverpool, West Ham and Manchester City are among the HITC’s nominees for best top flight goal.
Here at HITC Sport we are compiling a poll on the best goal scored in the Premier League in 2016. There have been some astonishing strikes: fluid passing moves, pinpoint finishes and thunderbolts aplenty this year which have lit the league up, meaning this poll has not been short of potential candidates. While there were a plethora of goals which we considered, we have narrowed it down to just six efforts, which are as follows:
Dele Alli vs Crystal Palace
Dele Alli celebrates scoring the second goal for Tottenham against Palace
Dele Alli’s goal was one which set social media ablaze as it was one of the strikes of last season. Tottenham were locked at 1-1 with Crystal Palace as they looked to make up ground on Leicester at the top. It took until the 84th minute for Alli to perform this piece of magic as he flicked the ball up over his head and volleyed into the bottom corner from outside of the box. It sent the fans into raptures as it proved to put the North Londoners on their way to victory.
Jamie Vardy vs Liverpool
Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy
Vardy scored both goals in the game, singlehandedly putting Liverpool to the sword as he maintained Leicester’s three point lead at the top of the table. Vardy’s second goal was fairly standard for the striker as he poked home from a cross, however, it was his first goal that astounded everyone watching. Riyad Mahrez played in a long ball for Vardy to run onto, but, instead of taking a touch and holding the ball up, the striker hammered the ball past Simon Mignolet from 25-yards to net a sublime strike.
Jordan Henderson vs Chelsea
Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson
Jordan Henderson’s goal was not akin to the player himself, but instead to the man he replaced in midfield and as captain. Steven Gerrard would have been proud of Henderson’s strike against Chelsea as the current Reds’ captain leathered the ball in from 25-yards out to score what proved to be the winner. To beat Thibaut Courtois from so far out means the strike had to be pinpoint and struck fiercely, which it was.
Dimitri Payet vs Crystal Palace
West Ham’s Dimitri Payet
The French midfielder was once again proving just how dangerous he is and, his latest free-kick begged the question, why would anyone even think of fouling a West Ham player with Payet around? The midfielder lined up the free-kick from 20-yards out, and he did not even look like missing. Payet’s dipping, curling free-kick sailed in just before half-time to put the Hammers ahead as they continued their pursuit of the European places.
Dimitri Payet vs Middlesbrough
West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet
Payet was once again the architect of West Ham’s performance as he displayed that it is not just free-kicks that he scores. The Hammers trailed by a single goal just after half-time as they seemed to be heading towards their fourth successive league defeat. However, Payet decided that that was a loss too many as he picked the ball up on the left before beating five men as he ran across goal before angling in a pinpoint strike to seal a point for his side.
Sergio Aguero vs West Brom
Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero
Aguero starred throughout the game as he once again proved just how deadly he can be. He scored twice on the day to go with Ilkay Gundogan’s brace, but the Argentine’s second goal was another brilliant one. The striker capitalised on some hesitant defending from the Baggies as he set himself, before smashing the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.
