The clubs nominated are Stoke City, Manchester City, Liverpool, Sunderland, Manchester United and Middlesbrough.
Here at HITC Sport we are compiling a poll of who have been the best fans in the Premier League during 2016. The league has had no shortage of incredible fan bases with the Premier League the most watched division in the world. Even with so many superb teams to choose form, we have narrowed it down to just five candidates, which are as follows:
Sunderland
Sunderland fans
It has not been an ideal year for Sunderland as they have seen successive campaigns in which they have been embroiled in relegation battles. They currently sit in 20th place in the league with 11 points as of their 15th game, and it seems that they will be left to fight for their Premier League lives once again. Even with all of this doom and gloom, the fans have still been superb as they continue to support their team. Perhaps the supporters’ best moment this year was the vociferous atmosphere in their win over Everton, which ultimately led to the relegation of their arch rivals Newcastle.
Stoke City
Stoke City fans inside the stadium before the game
Stoke are a side that are continuing to grow with each campaign they undertake. While they were unable to kick on at the start of this season, Mark Hughes’ side have put their poor form behind them as they have risen to 11th in the league with 19 points. The fans have been a huge influence on their season and the Bet365 Stadium is famous for its support. This has prompted the team itself to put their poor form behind them and they have started to reward the fans again.
Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough fans
Middlesbrough earned their promotion from the Championship to the Premier League last season and they have been a welcome addition to England’s top league, where they are holding their own in terms of their support and performances. Middlesbrough currently sit in 16th with 15 points and look particularly strong at the back, having only conceded 16 goals this term. Their fans continue to provide an electric atmosphere at the Riverside and they always take a strong following with them on away days.
Manchester United
Manchester United fans
One of the world’s biggest clubs with one of the largest fan bases, Manchester United have never been short of supporters. In recent times they have not had quite as much to shout about. However, Jose Mourinho is slowly building a team and, while it is not currently firing on all cylinders, if he is given time, it could turn into a title winning side. The fans have been the one thing that has remained a constant in recent seasons with their emphatic support providing an awesome atmosphere at Old Trafford.
Liverpool
Liverpool fans
Is it any surprise that the Reds’ fans feature in this poll? Liverpool have always been one of the most vocal clubs in the league and they continue to intimidate the teams that travel to face them. Anfield never fails to have a mesmerising atmosphere and the echoes of ‘You’ll never walk alone’ around the stadium are spine tingling. Their travelling fans are always in good voice too as they often out sing their hosts, especially towards the end of the game, while manager Jurgen Klopp has really been giving the fans something to shout about in recent months.
