After Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over recently relegated Rotherham United put them back into the top six having fallen out of it at the weekend, the Owls now need to be prepared to grind their way to finishing in a play-off spot.
A brace from Steven Fletcher was enough to secure the points against a hopeless Rotherham side in what will not be a performance for the history books, but that doesn’t matter for Owls fans – the points mean more at this stage.
While it’s nice to be playing attractive football and winning games, given how Wednesday have fared recently – no win in four prior to the Rotherham victory – all that matters is getting enough points to finish in that top six.
It has to be a case of substance over style for the Owls, and if you offered their fans six ugly 1-0 wins between now and the end of the season, they’d snap the proverbial hand off.

Carlos Carvalhal’s side will face much sterner tests than this, but after a stress inducing run for Owls fans, this win was the perfect tonic and should restore a lot of confidence around the club – least of all for Fletcher, who hadn’t scored in four months prior to his brace.
Wednesday now have a two point lead over seventh placed Fulham, however the two could easily swap places again at the weekend as Wednesday go to Newcastle United while the Whites host Ipswich Town.
