Liverpool fans were impressed by Steven Caulker’s performance at the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old, on his debut, helped Sierra Leone to a goalless draw against one of the tournament’s favourites and the current holders in Algeria.

Caulker, who was signed up for a brief period by Jurgen Klopp in 2016, was lauded by the Liverpool fans for pocketing Riyad Mahrez during the game.

The Algeria captain wasn’t able to work his magic for his side, as Sierra Leone surprised many by walking away with a deserved point.

Now plying his trade in Turkey’s top-tier, Caulker was a regular in English football, donning the colours of QPR, Cardiff and Tottenham, to name a few, during his career.

Not only that, but the hard-hitting defender has also donned the colours of England, when he scored on his one and only cap against Sweden.

But now his footballing life is leading him down a new path and it has got off to a very good start.

Compared with the other nations in the AFCON’s, Sierra Leone aren’t one of the top dogs in the tournament.

But they have done pretty well to start off their campaign by keeping Algeria at bay and it will be interesting to see how they perform as the AFCON’s go on.

Either way, it’s great to see Caulker enjoying his football and picking himself up from the canvas after a number of rocky roads in his footballing career.
