Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has been non-committal about Fernando Llorente’s role.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that he is unsure just how much of a role Fernando Llorente will have for the rest of the season.
Spurs picked up a 2-1 win over PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night, with Harry Kane proving to be the hero with two goals in the final 12 minutes to turn the game on its head.
However, there was also a huge impact from substitute Llorente, who came on late in the day to try and give Spurs more attacking prowess when chasing the game.
Llorente gave Tottenham a direct option in the final third, and allowed Kane to find space in and around the box, enabling Spurs to come from behind and claim all three points.
Spaniard Llorente has largely been a disappointment since his August 2017 move from Swansea City, and many are expecting him to leave when his contract expires in the summer.
Llorente may though be hoping for more playing time after his impact on Tuesday night, even if it’s simply more substitute appearances after just six goals in 36 games.
Pochettino has now suggested that he isn’t sure just how big Llorente’s role will be as Kane is the clear first-choice, saying ‘we’ll see’ when asked whether he will play more this season.
“We’ll see,” said Pochettino. “Fernando is part of the squad. But you know when you compete with Harry Kane it’s difficult. Of course I am so happy with him, his behaviour and personality. He’s very professional and it’s a little bit unlucky that you can’t give him more opportunities to play, but of course when we signed him he knew his role and he’s doing a fantastic role for the club,” he added.
