Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has reflected on the thrashing to Bayern Munich.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told The Independent that he told everyone that this would be a tough season, and is essentially being proven right.
Spurs took on Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, and whilst Son Heung-min fired Tottenham in front, that was as good as it got for Pochettino’s side.
Serge Gnabry ran riot with four goals in the second half, and with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice and Joshua Kimmich getting himself on the scoresheet too, Spurs fell to a shocking 7-2 defeat.
Spurs now have just one point from their first two Champions League games this season, and with a goal difference of -5, they already need a big fightback to make it through.
This comes just months after Tottenham reached the Champions League final, but with Pochettino’s side in patchy form early this season, a return to that stage looks unlikely.
After the game, Pochettino noted that he told everyone months ago that this would be a tough season, essentially suggesting that he is being proven right after some disappointing defeats.
Pochettino added that the final of the Champions League closed a chapter on the club, and a new chapter – with a new project – is now needed, and Tuesday’s humiliation isn’t going to change his opinion about that.
“I told you a few months ago that it’s going to be a tough season,” said Pochettino. “For me, after the final of the Champions League it was a chapter closed and now the club is in a period that they need to open another chapter and design a project, medium or long-term. It is not because the defeat (on Tuesday) is going to change my opinion,” he added.
It’s somewhat surprising that Pochettino felt this would be a tough season but only brought in three players to help him, in Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso, but maybe some January additions can help Spurs as they struggle to hit top form.
