Aston Villa were decent in spells against Tottenham, despite losing the game.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino admitted that he was surprised by the fluidity of Aston Villa’s play on Saturday, when speaking to reporters after his side’s 3-1 win over Dean Smith’s men, as quoted by Football.London.
The Villans took the lead early on, but were pegged back in the 71st minute by Tanguy Ndombele’s great strike, before Harry Kane bagged two late on in the contest to secure all three points for Spurs.
Aston Villa did display some real quality, however, with neat interchanges being accompanied by some fantastic passages of play.
Smith brought 12 new players to Villa Park in the summer, and many predicted that they might just struggle to gel.
One of those people was Pochettino. The Argentine told reporters on Friday how Villa need to be wary of what happened to Fulham last season.
The Tottenham boss admitted he was surprised by the west Midlands outfit, however, as quoted by Football.London:
“Of course at the beginning of the season and I told before in press conference yesterday that it’s not easy. It’s easy to maybe have the capacity to sign 10-15 players and spend money. The most difficult now is for the coach as the manager needs to build a team and create a dynamic that make you look like a team because to arrive with a lot of players is a massive job.”
He went on to say:
“For me, the manager is a great manager and I admire him. For sure they have the capacity to create a dynamic that Aston Villa deserve as they are a historic club with fantastic fans and an amazing stadium.”
Aston Villa fans will be expecting their side to push for a top half finish this season, and if they play to their full potential, they have every chance of doing just that.
