Mauricio Pochettino responds to second-tier club jibe aimed at Tottenham

Spanish newspaper Marca were critical of Tottenham Hotspur following their win over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Spurs Mauricio Pochettino addressed the media during his pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday, and responded to a jibe from Marca claiming that the north London outfit are a ‘second-tier club’, as quoted by popular football website Football.London.

Tottenham have been sensational in the main part this season, playing an exciting, attacking brand of football, and earning plaudits from pundits and fans alike for their attractive, high-tempo style.

Spanish media outlet Marca are obviously not big fans of Pochettino’s men, however.

They labelled Tottenham as a ‘second-tier club’, following their 3-1 win over Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Marca have previous with Spurs as well. They described them as a ‘hated’ club before the teams met at the Bernabeu earlier on in October, as reported by the Telegraph.

And Pochettino offered a calm and calculated response when asked by reporters what he thought of Marca’s latest jibe, as quoted by Football.London:

“I never talk about what you say or what you would like to write. In this case, a newspaper in Spain or everyone can put what they want. I cannot judge their opinion, it’s only to move on. The result, for me, against Real is in the past. It’s a massive achievement for us. Still two games to play. Last season we felt very disappointed to go out in first stage of the Champions League, now it’s a big step up for the team. It’s not that I don’t care, it’s only I’m just not worried. Anyone can have their opinion.”

Next up for Pochettino and co is a home game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League tomorrow, and they will be in desperate need of all three points as they look to keep pace with the two Manchester clubs above them in the table.
