Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has told Football365 that he did speak to Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata, but not about a Spurs move, as there would be ‘no sense’ to signing him.
Morata, 24, left Real Madrid to join Juventus in 2014, but after hitting 27 goals in 93 appearances for the Serie A giant, Real swooped to re-sign him last summer.
So far, the Spanish international – who has eight goals in 19 games for his country – has mostly served as a backup to Karim Benzema, adopting the same role he had before leaving the Santiago Bernabeu in the first place.
Morata has notched 16 goals in all competitions this season, starting only 14 games as he continues to occupy a bit-part role in the Spanish capital.
Earlier this week, Morata told The Guardian that he spoke to Chelsea boss Antonio Conte – the man who signed him for Juventus – and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino about summer moves to England.
Spurs are certainly in need of another striker, but convincing a player of Morata’s reputation to play as backup to Harry Kane seems like an almost impossible task for Spurs – despite the striker’s prior relationship with manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino has told Football365 that Morata texted him some years ago asking for advice, and they have remained close, prompting the discussions between the pair last summer that Morata referred to.

The Argentinian added that whilst maintaining a good relationship with the striker is one thing, bringing him to Spurs is another, suggesting that there is ‘no sense’ to trying to sign Morata.
“It is a special thing because I know Morata from when I started my (managerial) career at Espanyol,” said Pochettino. “The reality is that he sent a text to me when I was manager at Espanyol, he contacted me for some advice and then we kept the relationship.”
“He is a great kid and a very good player but it is not realistic to think Morata (will play) for us because it is one thing to maintain a good relationship between him and me but another to think about bringing him here. There is no sense to it,” he added.
