Mauricio Pochettino has hilariously told Sky Sports how Harry Kane proved to be a “disaster” for Tottenham during a 5-1 Europa League win back in 2014 over Asteras Tripolis. Having scored a hat-trick, Kane went in goal – and conceded.

Kane, a fresh-faced 21-year-old during the Europa League group stage clash, had netted a hat-trick. But with Spurs 5-0 up, also thanks to an Erik Lamela brace, Hugo Lloris was sent off. Kane decided to don the gloves for his boyhood club.

But, he was faced with a free-kick in order to keep Tottenham’s clean sheet intact. Jeronimo Barrales blasted a ball through Kane to score a consolation for the Greek side at White Hart Lane. The goal was met with smiles and a laugh.

That given, Kane had already scored three and Spurs were 5-0 up. Pochettino was discussing how Kane could play in most positions on the pitch – but when asked if he could go in goal, Pochettino said no, recalling the 2014 win.

“Goalkeeper? No. I remember that UEFA Cup game, he was a disaster. We conceded a goal and he made a mistake. A goalkeeper, no but any other position, yes,” Pochettino said during an interview with Kaveh Solhekol on Sky Sports.

While Kane has the quality and the intelligence that would allow him to play in most positions on the field, he proved that night that he is no goalkeeper. Luckily for Spurs or England, he has not been used in that position ever again.

Kane has been very effective in the final third for England at the World Cup so far, without actually scoring. He has three assists already, two against Iran and one against Wales on Tuesday night. England now face Senegal on Sunday.
