Mauricio Pochettino has praised Chelsea defender Levi Colwill amid claims Liverpool think they can sign him.

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Chelsea defender Levi Colwill this summer appear to be dwindling.

Speculation has surrounded defender Colwill throughout the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old has returned from a superb loan spell at Brighton and Hove Albion with his future unclear.

Colwill doesn’t want to go back to being third or fourth choice at Chelsea having just enjoyed such a strong campaign.

Chelsea don’t really want to sell such a talented player though and have so far resisted approaches from Brighton over a permanent deal.

90Min even reported earlier in July that Liverpool believe the defender wants a move to Anfield this summer.

The Reds seem to be fancying adding a left-footed centre back this summer – or were before Saudi Arabian clubs started picking off their midfielders.

Liverpool felt confident of a deal but Chelsea are standing firm – and Colwill appears to have a fan in Mauricio Pochettino.

Liverpool target Levi Colwill hailed by Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino

Colwill was handed a starting role on Saturday night as Chelsea faced Brighton and Hove Albion in a pre-season friendly.

This was a very entertaining clash as Chelsea ran out 4-3 winners against Colwill’s old club.

Pochettino has now attempted to kill off the rumours once and for all by heaping praise on Colwill.

As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, Pochettino stated that Colwill is a ‘fantastic player’ with ‘massive’ potential.

Pochettino added that Chelsea are now looking for Colwill to improve as whilst he is a ‘great’ option right now, he can be even better down the line.

The Blues will hope to have done enough to keep hold of Colwill by giving him starting minutes ahead of the new Premier League season.

It’s hard to imagine that Liverpool will manage to tempt Chelsea into a deal now, but with Colwill having just two years left on his deal, the Reds may just keep one eye on his situation.
