Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino addressed the media ahead of his side’s clash with Manchester City in the Premier League tomorrow, and provided an update on Erik Lamela, after the 25-year-old played 74 minutes in midweek against Brighton and Hove Albion, as quoted by popular football news website Football.London.

The Argentine has appeared in Tottenham’s last four Premier League games, having been absent from action for the previous 13 months, and Pochettino is understandably nurturing the winger back to action, rather than throwing him in at the deep end.

The Lilywhites seem to have got their season back on track, with three consecutive victories in all competitions, but their struggles in breaking teams down this term have highlighted how important someone with Lamela’s skill-set is to them.

Pochettino spoke to the media today, and expressed his delight at the manner in which the Argentine winger has adjusted back to being involved with the first team, and playing regularly again, as quoted by Football.London:

Erik Lamela of Tottenham Hotspur looks on from the bench during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley at White Hart Lane on December 18, 2016 in London, England.

“It was so important to feel from the beginning to start to play 70 minutes. It’s true that after the game he was so tired. It’s not the same to play 20/25 minutes. It’s good because he needs to adapt again his body to the competition. Everything changes when you compete. It’s not the same 70 minute training as 70 minute competing. We are so happy with his evolution. He’s happy because he’s feeling better and better. Of course he will be so important for the rest of the season, so important for the team for the rest of the season.”

Next up for Spurs is a daunting trip to the Etihad to take on Pep Guardiola’s rampant Manchester City side tomorrow, and nothing less than a win will do, if they harbour genuine ambitions of challenging for the title.

And Lamela will be hoping for another chance to impress.
