Tottenham Hotspur are back at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as they host Liverpool in a vital Premier League game.
Spurs picked up a superb 1-1 draw away at Real Madrid on Tuesday night, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men defying expectations at the Santiago Bernabeu.
It’s now back to the Premier League and back to Wembley for Spurs, who beat Bournemouth 1-0 at their temporary home last weekend, with Christian Eriksen bagging the winner in that victory.
Spurs will hope for a similar result this weekend, and whilst Pochettino faces a number of selection decisions, one player has given him a major dilemma ahead of Sunday’s clash.
Striker Fernando Llorente was handed a surprise start against Real Madrid in midweek, and the Spaniard impressed with his link-up play with Harry Kane in a two-man Spurs attack.
The deadline day signing from Swansea City has yet to start a Premier League game for Tottenham, but having impressed against Real, the time may be right for Pochettino to deploy Llorente in a first Premier League start.
Liverpool’s defence has been shaky all season, particularly on crosses in the heart of the back line, and the physically dominant Llorente could thrive against the Reds defence if given consistent serve in the middle.
The Spaniard even has history of impressing against Liverpool, having scored twice at Anfield last season, including a towering header against a static Reds defence – something Pochettino may want to take advantage of.
Having shown signs of linking up well with Harry Kane, Pochettino should at least give strong consideration to handing Llorente a first Premier League start for Spurs against Liverpool – and given his height and his record against Liverpool last term, Jurgen Klopp may prefer to see him on the Tottenham bench.
