Tottenham Hotspur have handed a new contract to Kyle Walker-Peters.
Tottenham Hotspur have handed another new deal to full back Kyle Walker-Peters – and the announcement of his contract extension leaves Mauricio Pochettino with a decision to make.
Spurs confirmed today that Walker-Peters – a homegrown prospect – has extended his deal until 2023, keeping him at the club for the next five years.
The 21-year-old is likely to start against Barcelona in the Champions League tomorrow night, with Serge Aurier and Kieran Trippier both struggling through injury.
When January comes, boss Pochettino will have a big decision to make on Walker-Peters’ immediate future in light of his new deal.
Tottenham have made it clear that Walker-Peters is here to stay, and his long-term future is in North London, so making a plan for his development in the second half of the season is key.
At 21, Walker-Peters needs to be playing first-team football somewhere, and Pochettino needs to figure out whether he wants to send him out on loan for the rest of the season.
Ultimately, Walker-Peters is third choice at both right back and left back, and a loan move could do him the world of good when January comes.
Pochettino hasn’t been overly keen on loaning his top young players out in recent years though, and may feel that he is better off continuing to learn behind Aurier and Trippier – but with his long-term future in no doubt, Pochettino must decide the best way to maximise Walker-Peters’ potential at a crucial stage in his development.
