Tottenham’s victory against Manchester City means Pochettino joins Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool managers with multiple wins against Guardiola.
Tottenham celebrate their first goal against Manchester City
As Mauricio Pochettino’s men ended Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten run as Manchester City manager, the stats came rolling in. Guardiola’s first away defeat since December 2015, Tottenham becoming the only remaining unbeaten team in the Premier League and the first time a Guardiola team had failed to score in a league game since March 5th.
Perhaps the most interesting statistic from the weekend’s result was Mauricio Pochettino becoming only the eighth man to have beaten a Pep Guardiola team twice. As was widely reported in the build up to Sunday’s tie, Pochettino’s first ever win in management came against Guardiola’s Barcelona team back in 2009, whilst manager of Espanyol.
Yesterday’s victory against the former Bayern Munich boss takes Pochettino to two wins against the man many regard as the finest manager in the world. Pochettino joins Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho and Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp on the list of multiple winners against Guardiola, although none of the Premier League quartet have won more games than they’ve lost to the Spaniard.

The four other managers to have beaten Guardiola from outside the Premier League are Dieter Hecking, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini and Markus Weinzieri. Former Dortmund and current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has the most impressive record against Guardiola of any Premier League boss, with a record of 4 wins and 4 losses.
Pochettino, meanwhile, has an overall record of 2 wins, 3 draws and 5 defeats at the hands of the former Brescia midfielder. The only manager to have beaten Guardiola more times than having lost to him is the man who replaced him at Bayern Munich, Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian has a 100% record against Guardiola, having faced him twice and won on both occasions. As for Pep’s old adversary, Jose Mourinho, the two have faced each other a whopping 17 times, with Guardiola coming out on top 9 times, Mourinho 3 times and 5 clashes resulting in draws.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has a mixed record against Guardiola, with 2 wins, 2 draws and 4 defeats to his name, whilst former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini may have won twice against Guardiola, but he has lost to his teams eight times, and drawn once.
Markus Weinzierl’s place on the list alongside some of the game’s greatest coaches is rather impressive, when one considers both of his victories against Guardiola came whilst he was the manager of Augsburg. Weinzerl left Augsburg to join Schalke in the summer.
The only other manager to have beaten Guardiola more than once is Dieter Hecking, the former Leipzig and Hannover midfielder beat Guardiola twice as Wolfsburg manager, although he did also lose to the Spaniard on six occasions.
