Tottenham Hotspur named their squad for their Champions League tie against Juventus today.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino addressed the media during his pre-match press conference today, after naming his Champions League squad, and responded to questions asking why Juan Foyth was omitted from the group, as quoted by popular football news website Football.London.
Pochettino brought the young Argentine to Tottenham from Estudiantes in the summer of 2017, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £8 million, but he has struggled for game-time, making just five appearances in all competitions thus far.
With Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and even Eric Dier are all currently ahead of Foyth in the centre-back pecking order, the 20-year-old has his work cut-out if he hopes to force his way into the side during the remainder of the campaign.
Pochettino spoke to reporters today, and was adamant that it was not only his decision to leave the Argentine out of the Champions League squad for the club’s knockout tie against Juventus later this month, as quoted by popular football news website Football.London:
“But that is not only my decision. It is a club decision, with the chairman, the administration and with the chief scout. It was a club decision. But you know it was Lamela in the first part of the Champions League. Now we cannot put all in there, because we struggle a little bit with the list because that situation is the reality. We don’t have space for everyone.”
Spurs face Liverpool on Sunday, before welcoming Arsenal to Wembley the following weekend, leading up to their clash with Juventus on February 13th, so they will have to be at their very best over the coming weeks, if they are to emerge from the period unscathed.
