Pochettino fires warning to Spurs new boy Juan Foyth, claims he must show why Tottenham signed him

Tottenham Hotspur take on West Ham United in the Carabao Cup this evening.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has told The Mirror that young defender Juan Foyth must step up and show why is a Spurs player when he faces West Ham United this evening.

Spurs have enjoyed a superb run of results so far this month, having beaten Bournemouth 1-0 and Liverpool 4-1 in the Premier League, with the impressive 1-1 draw at Real Madrid sandwiched between them.

Tonight, Tottenham are in Carabao Cup action, as they host London rivals West Ham United at Wembley Stadium, with a place in the last eight up for grabs.

Whilst West Ham are in torrid form having lost 3-0 to Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday, they will still pose a threat to Spurs, and Pochettino will be hoping that a rotated side can get the job done.

A number of stars will be rested ahead of the weekend Premier League clash against Manchester United, and one player set to come into the side is defender Juan Foyth.

Snapped up from Estudiantes in his native Argentina just a day before August’s transfer deadline, Foyth has made just one appearance for Tottenham so far, helping keep a clean sheet in the 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Barnsley last month.

However, Foyth faces a much sterner test this evening, especially with giant West Ham striker Andy Carroll available to play – and as a relatively small-statured centre back, Foyth must stand up and be counted tonight.

Ahead of the game, Spurs boss Pochettino has suggested that Foyth must show why Tottenham signed him, telling The Mirror that he can put himself in the first-team picture with impressive displays, with Pochettino warning him that he must show his quality against a ‘massive striker’ in Carroll, proving he can compete in big games too.

“Foyth is young, but he needs to show why is here,” said Pochettino. “And maybe then he has the possibility to play. You will only know if he is ready to play if he plays. Maybe in the future, if some players are suspended or maybe we have some injuries, then we’ll play with him.”

“I remember playing when I was 17 or 18 against a massive striker — and I’m smaller than Juan. I’d say, ‘Come on. You need to show.’ Juan’s at Tottenham now. He needs to fight and prove that he can compete in these type of games,” he added.
