Tottenham Hotspur took on Sunderland this weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has been speaking to reporters about his reasoning behind dropping Ben Davies, with his comments published on the club’s official Twitter account.

The Welsh international has been playing in the absence of Danny Rose, who is currently side-lined through injury, but Davies had to make do with a place on the bench for the Premier League clash with Sunderland this weekend.

Davies divides opinion among Tottenham fans, with some feeling he deserves more chances and others believing he is nowhere near the standard of Rose. But whatever side of the fence you reside on, Sunday’s match gave supporters the chance to see Jan Vertonghen start out wide with Eric Dier partnering Toby Alderweireld in the centre.

“With Rose’s injury Ben Davies would have played three games in a row and that’s always difficult,” Pochettino said.

“So we need to rotate and it’s for that reason we move Eric Dier alongside Toby and Jan is used to playing full-back for Belgium.”

Davies is unlikely to have been too tired having made only two appearances for Tottenham this season. However that was the manager’s decision and the 23-year-old is likely to be back in the starting XI when Spurs take on Gillingham in the EFL Cup next week.
