Pochettino confirms Sissoko wanted exit, just like Son Heung-min in 2016 – can he enjoy similar turnaround?

Tottenham Hotspur’s Moussa Sissoko continued his recent revival with a goal in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Huddersfield Town – and he will now be hoping to copy Son Heung-min.

Spurs coasted to a 4-0 win at Huddersfield, with Harry Kane scoring twice in the first half alongside Ben Davies’ goal, before Sissoko came off the bench to add a late fourth.

The Frenchman turned in impressive displays against West Ham United and APOEL Nicosia in the lead-up to Saturday’s game, and his first ever goal for Spurs suggests that he may be on the road to a shock revival with Tottenham.

Signed from Newcastle on deadline day in August 2016, Sissoko endured a miserable first season with Spurs, and after Saturday’s win, manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed that the Frenchman did ask to leave over the summer.

‘The player was the first interested to move or to leave because he wanted to play more in a season that has the World Cup at the end,’ Pochettino told the Daily Mail. ‘But I think maybe that possibility didn’t exist and I was more than happy for him to stay and give him the possibility to play.”

‘It’s always a decision between the player and the club and for him, in this case, he didn’t play too much last season or not play all that he wanted to play, and always the player is looking to move, to try to feel better and try to be important, maybe at another club,’ he added.

Pochettino’s comments come just over a year since he made similar revelations about Son Heung-min, as he told the London Evening Standard in September 2016 that the South Korean had asked to leave Spurs after a frustrating first season in North London.

Son ended up staying with Tottenham and enjoying a superb season last term, notching 14 goals and six assists as he played a much bigger role under Pochettino, giving Sissoko some real belief of what could happen this season.

If Sissoko applies himself just like Son did, and emerge into a much bigger role with Spurs, then the notion of him wanting to leave will be long, long forgotten – and he should be looking to copy Son’s revival this term.
