Losing Toby Alderweireld would be a big blow to Tottenham but the club are well prepared for his departure.

We asked this week if Davinson Sanchez was signed with Alderweireld’s replacement in mind, but he is not the only player Spurs signed last summer.

Tottenham signed defender Juan Foyth from Estudiantes and he has steadily impressed with his performances in cup competitions.

He was lauded by Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino this week, who told of his full confidence in the youngster.

Pochettino’s comments show he will have no problem at all giving Foyth a more prominent role in the first team, and moving on from Alderweireld if he has to.

He was quoted by Football London: “He is going to surprise many people. Juan is a great kid with a lot of quality to become one of the fantastic centre-backs in the Premier League and Europe too.”

Pochettino’s praise of Sanchez and Vertonghen’s partnership also hinted at a changing of the guard: “I think it is a fantastic couple, they have a fantastic partnership. Davinson has pace and energy, he is so fast, but he still needs to improve in different aspects and Jan is a perfect partner to help him to achieve all that we believe he can achieve.”

They are not comments from a manager who is concerned or panicking about what he will be left with if Alderweireld moves on.

Pochettino seems at peace with the situation and ready to make full use of the players he has available if the Belgian is sold.

His calm demeanour and confidence should mean Spurs should not panic either.
