Tottenham losing to Liverpool at the weekend was bad enough.

Hearing manager Mauricio Pochettino’s comments after the game made the 2-1 loss look even worse.

Pochettino was quoted by The Guardian commenting that Tottenham were ‘scared’ to play their normal game against Liverpool and paid the price.

Publicly admonishing his players, Pochettino said they needed to show more faith in their abilities.

He said: “We were a little bit scared to play out from the back

“That translates after to the different lines – to the midfield and the offensive line. We conceded a lot of chances. There was a lack of pace and confidence and that surprised me because when you play with a defensive line with a lot of experience, you should show more confidence in your skill.”

Tottenham are supposed to be competing with Liverpool for the title, and even finished above the Reds last season.

It is fair to pay them respect, but Tottenham should not be ‘scared’ of their rivals.

Pochettino’s assessment is a bit embarrassing for Tottenham’s players, and even fans to hear.

It is even more concerning when considering how Tottenham will fare when they face Manchester City, or even Barcelona next month in the Champions League.
