Tottenham Hotspur boss confirms club have option to bring back Championship talents.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed the club have the option to bring back their two Championship loanees in the January transfer window.
Midfielder Joshua Onomah is on loan at Aston Villa, while centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers is with Sheffield United.
Both players have benefited from playing regular football, and have previously found the leap into Tottenham’s first team tough.
Pochettino addressed the situation at his Friday press conference, telling The Guardian: “We have the possibility to bring them back.”
Whether they actually will, is another matter, but it is sensible business from Tottenham to keep the situation open.
It would take an injury crisis for Spurs to take this route, if either player were suddenly discarded by their loan sides, or if Pochettino was swayed by their performances so much that he saw an immediate role in the Tottenham first team.
Of these situations, Spurs are more likely to recall Carter-Vickers due to their own injuries in defence, with Toby Alderweireld currently out until 2018.
Carter-Vickers, 19, has made 13 first team appearances for the Blades, scoring once and providing two assists from centre-back.
Onomah, 20, has scored three goals for Aston Villa in 18 games and provided one assist.
Both Villa and Sheffield United are battling to win promotion from the Championship, and Spurs should consider letting their seasons play out and assess their pair in the summer.
