The Spurs boss said Alonso is one of the best Formula 1 drivers even though he finished outside the top 10 in last season’s championship.

Mauricio Pochettino has compared his Tottenham Hotspur side to former Formula One racing driver Fernando Alonso in comments that should be alarming to Spurs fans.
The Lilywhites are currently third in the Premier League table ahead of Saturday’s home game against Newcastle United.
They could go second, four points behind leaders Liverpool, if they win the lunchtime kickoff against the Magpies.
However, some Tottenham fans have expressed concern over the injuries to some of their key players, plus the fact no new recruits have been made since last January, and how that could impact on their form.
Casting an eye to Alonso, who will return to race at the Indianapolis 500 in May and was described by Pochettino as the best F1 driver alongside Lewis Hamilton, he finished 11th in his McLaren in last season’s F1 championship.
At his pre-match press conference, Pochettino used the example of Alonso facing Hamilton in a superior car, to highlight the challenge his Spurs charges face in their title tilt.

“You can be a winner but if you don’t have the tools to win, it’s difficult. If you have the car to win and you are good, then you win,” he is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying.
“Take the example of Fernando Alonso and compare with Hamilton. If you put Hamilton in McLaren last season and Alonso in Mercedes, it’s the same result: Hamilton at the bottom and Alonso at the top.”
Although it’s no secret that Tottenham have a new stadium to pay for and one could argue Spurs may have not been able to sign anyone that would truly bolster the ranks last month, an analogy linked to not having the tools to win should be concerning.
