It was another busy weekend for Newcastle United’s 16 loanees, with some starring for their new clubs

Adam Armstrong, Siem De Jong and Florian Thauvin all found the net this weekend as Newcastle United’s vast collection of loanees made their mark for their new clubs.

Armstrong came off the bench with half an hour to play of Barnsley’s match at Preston, and the England under-19 international stole the show in the closing stages at Deepdale.

The striker produced a superb piece of skill and matched it with a precise curling finish into the top corner to seal a 2-1 win for the Tykes which continued their fine start to the season.

Siem De Jong – whose two-year spell on Tyneside was blighted by seemingly constant injuries – appeared for PSV’s second string as he is not yet considered fit enough for first-team action. He certainly made an impression for the reserves, scoring a fantastic free-kick which flew into the top corner from 30 yards.

Elsewhere, Emmanuel Riviere went from being frozen out of the Magpies first team picture to appearing at the Bernabeu on Saturday, as he made his debut for Real Osasuna. The Frenchman played the opening hour of his new team’s heavy 5-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, being substituted with his team 5-0 down.

Forgotten man Henri Saivet was also in European top flight action over the weekend, making his bow for St Etienne in their creditable 1-1 draw at PSG. The January signing made just four appearances as the Toon slipped towards their eventual relegation last season, but played 89 minutes in his first match back in Ligue 1, picking up a yellow card in the process.

Staying in Ligue 1, Florian Thauvin found the net for Marseille as they went down to a 3-2 defeat at Nice. Thauvin was a huge disappointment in his six-month spell at St James’ Park during the first half of last season, but seems far more comfortable back on home turf. Yesterday’s strike was his second goal in four games this season, the winger also having netted at Guingamp in August.

Tim Krul is still yet to make his comeback from nearly a year on the sidelines. There were whispers that the Dutch goalkeeper could make his Ajax debut at the weekend but the 28-year-old was not in the squad; the next chance for Krul to make his long-awaited return is on Thursday evening at Panathinaikos in the Europa League.

Domestically, Ivan Toney scored his second goal in consecutive games for Shrewsbury. The former Barnsley man netted with a brave header to equalise for the Shrews at Bury, but they couldn’t hold on to their point and went down 2-1 after conceding in stoppage time.

Sammy Ameobi came off the bench for Bolton as the Trotters were again held to a 1-1 draw at home, this time by MK Dons. Ameobi’s 28-minute cameo failed to inspire the home side to victory, but Phil Parkinson’s side remain top of the table.

Jamie Sterry got another 90 minutes under his belt for Coventry, but his side’s winless start to the season continued. However, a 1-1 draw at promotion hopefuls Millwall represents progress for the Sky Blues, for whom Sterry picked up a late caution.

In League Two, Macauley Gillesphey played the full match as Carlisle shared the spoils with Leyton Orient at Brunton Park, and Alex Gillead was thrown on for the final five minutes of Luton’s home defeat to Grimsby. There was no weekend action for Haris Vuckic at Bradford, Crewe’s Liam Smith, Newport’s Kyle Cameron or Tom Heardman, who was an unused substitute for Hartlepool.
