Claude Puel’s impressive start to life as Southampton manager suffered a setback at the weekend when his side were defeated 2-1 by Hull City, but the Frenchman can be pleased with his work so far going into the latest international break.
It is a weekend of World Cup qualifiers that feature a strong contingent of Saints players across Europe and the rest of the world, and several matches involving Southampton’s international brigade are being televised live in the UK.
Staying close to home to start with, there are a trio of Saints in the England Under-21 side, who are facing their Italian opponents on Thursday evening.
James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond and Jack Stephens are all in the squad for the match, which is live on BT Sport 1 at 7.45pm, and they will be in familiar surroundings as the game is at St Mary’s.
England’s senior squad then take on Scotland at Wembley on Friday evening. Fraser Forster has been forced to pull out of the match through injury, but Ryan Bertrand is in contention and will battle it out with Aaron Cresswell and Danny Rose for a starting berth at left-back.
The action from Wembley kicks off at 7.45pm and is being shown live on ITV1.
At the same time Bertrand may be lining up for England, Steven Davis will be aiming to inspire Northern Ireland. Michael O’Neill’s side host Azerbaijan at Windsor Park live on Sky Sports 1 knowing that a win will bring them level on points with their second-placed opponents.
Rounding off Friday’s action involving Saints men, Pierre-Emile Hojberg will be hoping to add to his 17 Denmark caps as his side host Kazakhstan in Copenhagen.
The Danes need a win to keep them in contention in Group E after a poor start, and you can see whether they manage it live on Sky Sports 1 via the red button at 7.45pm.
Dusan Tadic takes centre stage from a Southampton point of view on Saturday, as his Serbia side face Wales in Cardiff. That crucial Group D encounter begins at 7.45pm and is live on Sky Sports 1.
Sunday is a busier day for the internationals from the south coast side, with three of their first team players lining up in World Cup qualifiers across Europe.
Dutch duo Virgil van Dijk and Jordy Clasie have both been named in Danny Blind’s squad for their potential banana skin away at Luxembourg. That one is being shown live on Sky Sports 1 and begins at 5:00pm.
Jose Fonte, meanwhile, is in the Portugal squad for their clash with Latvia in Faro in a match that is being shown live on ITV4, with a kick-off time of 7.45pm.
Of those games not televised in the UK, Sofiane Boufal will be in action for Morocco against the Ivory Coast (Saturday, 8pm) and Maya Yoshida will take his place in Japan’s defence as they host Oman in a friendly (Friday, 10.20am).
