We understand that Plymouth Argyle have offered their vacant manager’s job to Ian Foster, following talks.

HITC Football sources have confirmed that The Pilgrims have been hugely impressed with Foster and he is now expected to succeed Steven Schumacher at Home Park.

Former England youth coach Foster is currently assistant to Steven Gerrard at Al Ettifaq – who have given him permission to make the move.

Argyle lost Ryan Lowe to Preston North End in 2021 and turned to assistant Schumacher his replacement.

Schumacher continued the good work and took Argyle to the Championship, easing to promotion with 101 points.

Schumacher’s attacking football earned him real admirers and he decided to leave last month, completing a move to Championship rivals Stoke City.

Argyle have been linked with a host of managers but now appear to have zeroed in on their top target.

We understand that Ian Foster has been offered the top and could become Argyle’s third Liverpudlian coach in a row.

Foster hails from Whiston, just like Steven Gerrard, and the pair are currently working together at Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq.

Foster is working as Gerrard’s assistant and has been given the green light to make the move to Home Park.

Who is Ian Foster?

Foster was in the Liverpool youth ranks as a kid but ended up carving out a career for himself in non-league football.

A striker in his playing days, Foster turned out for Hereford United, Barrow, Kidderminster Harriers and Chester City before heading to Galway United in 2008.

Foster then began his managerial journey in Ireland, taking the reins at Galway before heading to Dundalk in 2009.

After that spell as a manager, Foster worked in coaching roles at Coventry City and Portsmouth, earning himself a spot on the England Under-17 coaching staff alongside Steve Cooper and Mike Marsh.

Foster made his way up in the England ranks, managing the Under-18’s, Under-19’s and Under-20’s as well as taking on a role coaching the England Women’s side.

Foster decided to leave his role with The FA to follow Gerrard to Al Ettifaq, but Plymouth are now ready to hand him his first domestic managerial role in England.
