Arsenal fans on Twitter have claimed that they would like Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson to start against Liverpool tonight in the League Cup.

Bernd Leno is Arsenal’s regular in between the sticks and he also started their League Cup encounter against Leicester City last time out.

A certain Emiliano Martinez, who has now departed, was the guy for domestic cup games, but the Arsenal faithful would now like to see their new summer signing given a first chance.

The 25-year-old moved to North London from French club Dijon as a back-up to Leno with Martinez heading to Villa following his FA Cup heroics.

Could there be another hero in Rúnarsson? Well, Arsenal fans would like to see to that and you would expect Mikel Arteta to make changes after Monday’s Premier League showdown with the champions.

Given that other competitions are the priority, it wouldn’t be a surprise if both managers made a series of changes from their Premier League game.

Arsenal’s record transfer deals

  1. Nicolas Pepe

    £72 million

  2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    £56 million

  3. Alexandre Lacazette

    £52 million

  4. Thomas Partey

    45 million

  5. Mesut Ozil

    £42 million

It could be argued that it’s perhaps easier handing Rúnarsson a chance to showcase his talents when the Europa League games come about because there is less pressure in those matches.

But Rúnarsson has seemingly come to Arsenal to push Leno and there’s no better way to do it than this way, but he has to be handed that chance.

Nonetheless, here is a selection of Arsenal fans wanting the Icelandic shot-stopper to start at Anfield tonight:
