Aston Villa aren’t giving up on signing James Ward-Prowse, according to a report.
The Telegraph claimed on Wednesday that the Bodymoor Heath club are preparing an offer for Southampton to sign James Ward-Prowse.
Aston Villa have stiff competition in the form of Tottenham Hotspur.
But Villa have been ‘doing bits’ – as the kid say – in the transfer window this summer and it wouldn’t be surprised if Johan Lange pulls off another major deal for the club, particularly after selling Jack Grealish for £100 million.
Ward-Prowse has eight England caps and has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent midfielders down the years – and at 26, hasn’t hit the prime of his career yet.
Here’s how some Aston Villa fans are reacting on Twitter:
This would take Aston Villa’s spending well over the £100 million mark.
Dean Smith has welcomed five new senior signings this summer – Danny Ings, Emi Buendia, Ashley Young, Leon Bailey and Axel Tuanzebe [loan] – but Ward-Prowse would undeniably cost a pretty penny.
The Telegraph stops short of offering a price, but with four years left on his contract, and still only 26, Southampton are holding all the cards, it has to be said.
