Liverpool fans want Rangers boss Steven Gerrard to take the vacant manager’s job at Aston Villa.
On Sunday afternoon, Villa sacked Dean Smith after over three years in charge, as a run of five defeats on the bounce in the Premier League sealed his fate.
It’s not just Villa’s form this season that played a part in those in the boardroom handing Smith his P45, because they have also lost 18 games in 2021 – nobody else has suffered more losses.
But what is one man’s loss, is another man’s gain and now Villa are on the hunt for a new face to take to their dugout.
Premier League legend Gerrard, who won the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers last season by ending Celtic’s near ten-year dominance, is seemingly on Villa’s wishlist, as reported by the Telegraph.
Liverpool fans would like to see their club legend take to the reigns in the Midlands because they think it’s the road he needs to go down in order to, one day, take over at Anfield.
The only issue here is that if Villa are seriously considering bringing Gerrard to the club, then would he leave the Glasgow-based side mid-way through the season? Probably not.
That’s where Villa will encounter issues, but the big wad of cash they have behind them and the lure of the Premier League, could prove to be the difference-maker.
It just seems inevitable that Gerrard will land on the doorsteps of the Premier League one day as a manager, but like his old partner in crime in Frank Lampard, will he be given a straight shot at his club?
Or will he take to a club outside of the top end of the table, push them higher up and then land himself the job on Merseyside? Well, only time will tell.
Here is a selection of Liverpool fans reacting to Gerrard being linked with Villa’s vacant manager’s role:
