Ally McCoist criticised Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos on Sky Sports Football Main Event (12:38pm, January 2, 2023) for his role in Daizen Maeda’s goal for Celtic in the opening minutes of the Old Firm derby at Ibrox on Monday afternoon.

Celtic took the lead against Michael Beale’s Rangers in the Scottish Premiership match at Ibrox after just five minutes.

It was 25-year-old Japan international attacker Maeda who found the back of the net.

It was a wonderful finish from the Celtic star, but Morelos and James Tavernier could have done better in the build-up to it.

While Rangers striker Morelos played a blind pass, right-back Tavernier should have made a better challenge on Maeda.

Rangers legend McCoist was on co-commentary duty for the match on Sky Sports, and he was not impressed by Tavernier and Morelos.

The pundit slammed Morelos, who has not been playing great for the Gers so far this season, in particular for giving the ball away so cheaply.

It was really awful of Morelos to play a blind pass like that, especially inside the Rangers half.

McCoist said: “I have got to say equally culpable Tavernier. It’s a poor ball from Morelos, really poor, plays it blind, you can’t play a ball blind in that area. He has got to give it back to his centre-back.”
