Speaking on talkSPORT, Danny Murphy has been full of praise for Jonjo Shelvey amid Newcastle’s recent revival.
Shelvey has been a stalwart in that midfield in recent weeks, and he’s even managed to keep the big-money January signing Bruno Guimaraes out of the side since he arrived.
Murphy has, quite simply, been blown away by Shelvey, claiming that he’s playing better than he has for a long time.

Murphy was full of praise for Shelvey.
“He’s evolved Joelinton in that midfield role, he’s left Shelvey in who has been playing out of his skin, better than he’s played in a long time, even though he spent god knows how much on Guimaraes. He’s given Shelvey that responsibility and left him in there when he could’ve dragged him out,” Murphy said.
Stepped up
Whether it’s because of the challenge of competing with Guimaraes or Eddie Howe’s coaching, Shelvey has found another level in recent weeks.
He’s always been a fantastic technician, but he’s really shining in this side right now acting as a leader and a playmaker in the middle of the park.
Newcastle look as though they will be clear of relegation, and while more signings are inevitable this summer, any new midfielders may have to do something special to get into this starting XI.
Who knows? If Shelvey keeps this up it may not be long before he’s once again considered for an England call-up.
