According to BBC Sport (Transfer Live blog, 10:29am, October 5, 2020), Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn could leave the club today, amid speculation that Leeds United and Stoke City want him.
HampshireLive reported on September 28 that Leeds in the Premier League and Championship club Stoke are interested in signing Gunn from Southampton in the summer transfer window.
Leaving Southampton today
Alex McCarthy has done well for Southampton, while Fraser Forster has returned from his loan spell at Celtic.
This means more competition for Gunn, who played 12 times in the Premier League in 2018-19 and 10 times in the English top flight in 2019-20 for the Saints, according to WhoScored.
It would make sense for Gunn to find a new club to play regular first-team football.
Leeds United transfer?
Described by then Southampton manager Mark Hughes as “a player who clearly possesses a tremendous amount of potential” on the Saints’ official website in July 2018, Gunn would do a good job for Leeds or Stoke.
However, with Illan Meslier the first-choice goalkeeper and Kiko Casilla still at the club, it is not going to be easy for Gunn to break into Marcelo Bielsa’s starting lineup at Elland Road.
