Daniel Sturridge looks set to be released by Perth Glory at the end of the season.

The A-League outfit’s CEO spoke about Sturridge’s future in The Guardian this week, and it seems as though he won’t be spending a second season in Australia after joining in October.

“From a marketing point of view, the first game, we had 18,000 on the back of him arriving and the hype. Then unfortunately he got injured, and he hasn’t been seen since,” Perth Glory’s CEO said.

“He’s training and there’s potential that he could play some minutes this week and then finish off the season. Next year? Look, I doubt that we’ll offer him another contract.”

Unfortunately, Sturridge getting injured and missing large periods of a season is a story we’ve heard one too many times.

The striker being released by Perth is yet another setback in a career that has taken a cruel twist in recent years.

In 2019, Sturridge was let go by Liverpool after winning the Champions League with the Reds, and to be fair, that was probably the right decision from the Anfield outfit. After all, injuries had hampered his development.

A move to Trabzonspor would follow, but once again, in 2020 he was released by the Turkish outfit and banned from football for four months for breaching betting rules.

Sturridge then spent the 2020/21 season without a club, but a move to Australia would soon follow. However, sadly, despite stepping down a level, this is another chapter of his career that, quite simply hasn’t worked out.

Liverpool, Trabzonspor and now Perth Glory have all ditched Sturridge since 2019, and to be honest, it’s hard to see the striker getting another move after this.

Sturridge should have been an England regular for years to come, but sadly, injuries have wreaked havoc on his career, and now he’s set to be released for the third time since 2019.
