Before Aston Villa handed Steven Gerrard his P45 in the Midlands, it was said that Luis Suarez regularly asked for a move to Villa Park.
The Uruguay international’s exceptional career is almost over, although he remains close with Gerrard from their time at Liverpool, and The Athletic believe the South American pushed hard to join the Villans.
Eventually, The Athletic believe Aston Villa decided against signing the 35-year-old, despite his desperation to join.
Now, however, if Unai Emery is open to it, a move for Suarez would be very simple to complete.
Aston Villa can sign Luis Suarez
Well, after leaving Atlético Madrid at the end of last season, the Uruguayan joined Nacional on a short-term deal.
Suarez scored six goals in 13 appearances to fire Nacional to the Uruguayan Championship, although after securing the silverware, he announced he would be leaving the club.
As quoted by ESPN, the Salto-born striker said: “I am satisfied to have taken the right step, to have enjoyed this moment, and I am happy to end it like this.”

As a result, Aston Villa can sign him for free – the Villans could even strike an agreement now if they wanted to.
Suarez scored 69 goals in 110 Premier League appearances for Liverpool across four incredible seasons in England, where he made a name for himself as one of the greatest forwards ever seen on these shores.
Aston Villa should consider Luis Suarez
In our view, if he is willing to take a reasonable salary, we see no reason why Aston Villa shouldn’t offer Suarez a six-month contract in January.
The Villans are lacking an established frontman to bring off the bench, with 20-year-old Cameron Archer the only recognised striker on the sidelines during Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Newcastle.
Suarez may no longer be able to run defences ragged for 90 minutes, although he still possesses the quality to hurt opponents in a 30-minute spell from the bench.
Keep an eye on the Uruguayan’s situation – there is talk of a move to the United States, but after begging Gerrard to sign him for Aston Villa, who knows what could happen.
